Farmer Spotlight: Homesteading to Thriving Protein Operation - Sweet Magnolia Farms

When Nick and Anna bought their Farm in Shelby County, Alabama, in 2019, they had a deep passion for growing their own food. Quickly, that passion changed from just feeding friends and family to healing the local community with locally grown food. In order to do so, they had to meet the convenience of serving customers 24/7 online and streamline their order logistics to build a profitable Farm business.

Listen to Sweet Magnolia Farms’ story:

Becoming a Full-Time Farm Business

After a twelve-year career as a firefighter, Nick and his family quickly pivoted from a forty-acre homestead into a seventy-one-acre regenerative Farming operation. What began as a lot of land for two horses, chickens, pigs, and cattle rapidly expanded into a thriving direct-to-consumer business that their community was seeking. Named in honor of Anna’s horse of nearly twenty years, Sweet Magnolia Farms now serves its local community by delivering high-quality staple products including pork, beef, lamb, turkey, chicken, milk, and eggs.

Realizing You Can’t Do It All Alone

To successfully scale their direct-to-consumer business, Nick and Anna had to start shifting their mindset from “we can do it ourselves” to “we need assistance.” The Farm recognized that administrative hassles, such as manually tracking orders and keeping inventory up to date online, were pulling them away from in-the-field operations. This led Sweet Magnolia Farms to partner with Barn2Door in 2024. By implementing a fully integrated Farm ecommerce platform, they streamlined order logistics, eliminated administrative friction, and reclaimed valuable time to focus on the Farm.

“We would not have reached half of our customers if it wasn't for an online store. We have people tell us all the time that they looked up a ‘regenerative Farm’ or ‘organic chicken near me’, and we popped up. Then they go to our website, and they'll order from us to ship, or pick up at a market or one of our pickup locations. We never even talk to them until they receive their products.”

Boosting Farm Sales with Farmer’s Choice CSA

The Farm was facing a common challenge of Buyer fatigue. Buyers were becoming reluctant to purchase individual items and cuts, leading to inconsistent order volumes. By transitioning to an ongoing Farmer’s choice subscription model, Nick gained complete control over the Farm’s inventory and increased his average order value (AOV). The Farm has the liberty to pick and choose what goes into each subscription — whether fulfilled weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly — to meet the demand for seasonal products. By delivering curated offerings to Buyers, the Farm no longer struggles to fulfill their bundle box orders and has locked in predictable, recurring revenue year-round.

“Some boxes may just be pork and chicken, some may be beef and chicken, some may be beef, pork, and chicken – it really varies throughout the year. But 95% of the customers who sign up are flexible and enjoy getting a surprise every month while testing their culinary skills.”

Building Brand Awareness With Marketing

Social media marketing has proven to be an important asset to building a recognizable Farm brand for Sweet Magnolia. By sharing video reels, posts, and stories, the Farm can actively highlight its products, animals, and regenerative Farming practices. Showcasing an authentic look at life on the Farm — the good, the bad, and the ugly — has built strong credibility and established a dedicated base of loyal Buyers.

Generating anticipation prior to “re-stocks” has been key to the Farm’s FOMO marketing strategy (the “fear of missing out”). The Farm will showcase previews of upcoming harvests and processing dates to keep their audience informed on when popular items will be in stock. Now whenever new inventory is posted, Buyers act quickly - often purchasing up to three months of product in a single order to avoid running out!
